What Is a Civil Lawyer?

A civil lawyer is one who helps clients sort out civil disputes, or private disagreements between two or more parties.  

For this reason, they are also known as civil dispute lawyers or civil liability lawyers.

Civil Cases vs. Criminal Cases

It is important to note that a civil case is not the same as a criminal case. 

In a criminal case, the state charges a person for an alleged crime. Depending on the crime, it is possible for a civil case to arise out of a criminal one. 

Take, for example, a drunk driving case. The state would charge the driver for allegedly getting behind the wheel while intoxicated—that's the criminal case. On the other hand, if the drunk driver caused an auto accident, then the accident victim could bring a civil case against the drunk driver. In this civil case, the victim could seek compensation for their damages, such as medical bills and pain and suffering. 

Keep in mind that civil litigation comprises more than accident injury claims. Defamation, for instance, could also lead to financial and emotional losses. To recover those losses, the person who has been defamed or slandered could take the matter to civil court.
